Founded in Wolverhampton by the Stevens brothers, the company initially focused on engine production for other manufacturers before establishing its own motorcycle line in 1910. AJS achieved a significant racing legacy, holding 117 motorcycle world records, including victories in the Isle of Man TT. The company evolved through various ownership changes, including being acquired by Matchless and then Crossley Motors. AJS produced a wide range of motorcycles, from 250cc to 1,000cc models, and experimented with automobile production in the late 1920s. Following administrative proceedings in 1931, AJS motorcycle assets were transferred to Matchless and car production continued under Crossley Motors until 1932. Later, as part of Associated Motorcycles (AMC), AJS continued to produce racing motorcycles, including the Porcupine and 7R models, achieving success in international competitions. Production of AJS radios began in 1923, but the company discontinued radio manufacturing in 1928.
