It began production in 1899, initially under The Hozier Engineering Company and later as Argyll Motors Ltd. Alex Govan founded the company, producing Voiturettes based on contemporary Renault designs. The factory moved to Alexandria in 1906. Production restarted in 1910 under Argylls Ltd., introducing models such as the ‘Flying Fifteen’ and a six-cylinder model. In 1914, the factory was sold to the Royal Navy for torpedo production. Car manufacturing continued on a smaller scale until 1928, with models including the 15.9 hp and a 1½-litre sleeve valve engine. In 1976, the name was revived by a new company in Lochgilphead. Bob Henderson founded this second Argyll marque, producing the mid-engined Argyll GT in 1983.
