The company initially focused on automobile production, building its first cars at the La Macérienne factory in Mézières from 1903. Clément chose the name Bayard to honor Chevalier Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard, who saved Mézières in 1521. Clément-Bayard expanded into aviation in 1908, collaborating with Louis Capazza on the ‘planeur Bayard-Clément’ and later building Alberto Santos-Dumont's Demoiselle monoplane. The company manufactured Wright engines and began airship production in 1908 at La Motte-Breuil, producing several dirigibles for the French Army and Tsar Nicholas II. In 1914, production at La Macérienne was seized by the German army and redirected to war production. After World War I, motor production resumed, with Clément-Bayard producing a range of models from 1904 to 1914, including the Clément-Bayard 20 CV and 24 CV. The company also competed successfully in motor racing, winning several events including the Coupe de l’Automobile-Club de Cannes.
