Established in 1951 by the Mexican federal government, DINA initially operated under Diesel Nacional and was later acquired by Grupo Empresarial G in 1989. Throughout its history, the company collaborated with various international firms including Fiat, Renault, Marcopolo S.A., and Cummins, utilizing technologies from companies such as BMW. DINA primarily produces buses for urban, domestic, and international markets. From 1962 to the late 1980s, government protectionist policies supported domestic production and exports of freight trucks. In 1987, a technological alliance with Navistar International was formed, leading to the introduction of new truck models. Privatization began in 1989, with Grupo G acquiring the company. Contractual disputes with Western Star Trucks in 1999 resulted in production disruptions and significant layoffs. Despite these challenges, DINA continued to operate, with a plant closure in 2001 and subsequent restructuring. In 2007, DINA Camiones was restarted with a new plant and the production of four urban bus models.
