In 2023, Dongfeng reported sales of 671,000 vehicles, lower than SAIC Motor, Changan Automobile and FAW Group. The company develops and markets both commercial and consumer vehicles under its own brands, including M-Hero, Voyah, Aeolus, Nammi, Forthing, and under joint ventures with foreign brands such as Dongfeng Honda, Dongfeng Nissan and Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën. In 2021, foreign-branded vehicles accounted for 79% of sales. Dongfeng is controlled by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC). The company began as a factory producing an imitation of the GAZ-51 truck during the Korean War, initially planned for Qingshan District before being relocated to Wuchang. Production began in 1969 at a remote location chosen for its topography, initially producing only 200 automobiles by 1972. By the early 2000s, Dongfeng shifted its production to passenger cars, accounting for 73% of vehicles manufactured. The company expanded through numerous joint ventures with foreign automakers, including Kia, Honda and Nissan, starting in the early 2000s. In 2012, Dongfeng established its first research and development facility outside of China in Sweden. In 2013, a joint venture with Renault was formed to manufacture Renault vehicles for the Chinese market. In 2020, several joint ventures were dissolved, and the brand Voyah was introduced.
