Dorris developed and patented a float carburetor, which was used for many years in automobile production. The company initially operated from a plant formerly used by the St. Louis Motor Company. Early vehicles featured a four-cylinder engine and a 101-inch wheelbase, quickly becoming more powerful with six-cylinder engines and increased wheelbases. \n\nIn 1909, a Dorris car set a record for driving across Missouri. The company expanded its capital stock in 1917 to support growth and later acquired the Astra automobile manufacturer in 1920, reorganizing as Dorris Motors Corporation. Production ceased in 1923, with the company declaring bankruptcy in 1926.
