It was initially a small, affordable car and contributed to a shift from open touring cars toward enclosed passenger compartments. The Essex Motor Company leased the Studebaker factory in Detroit to produce the car. More than 1.13 million Essex automobiles were sold before the name was retired in 1932, when it became a product of Hudson. Early Essex cars achieved success in endurance tests and hill climb competitions. In 1920, the company introduced an enclosed sedan at a price similar to its open-bodied models. By 1928, Essex incorporated four-wheel mechanical brakes and featured strong \"piano hinge doors.\" By 1929, Essex was the third best-selling car in the United States.
