The factory’s initial purpose was to produce the Polski Fiat 126p, a Polish adaptation of the Fiat 126. A new manufacturing plant was located in Tychy, Poland. Until the early 1980s, FSM also produced the FSO Syrena. The FSM brand operated from 1971 to 1992, when Fiat Group acquired control. \n\nAfter privatization, the factory became Fiat Auto Poland and continued to manufacture various Fiat models. These included the Cinquecento, Seicento, and later the Panda and 500. The Bielsko-Biała plant focused on component manufacturing, supporting a joint venture with General Motors Europe for the production of diesel engines.
