Initially specializing in buggies and off-road vehicles, the company developed a unique system for constructing bodies using Plasteel, a composite material combining steel and fiberglass. Gurgel’s early successes included the Ipanema, Xavante (X-10 and X-12), and Itaipu electric vehicles. The company pioneered the BR-800, Brazil’s first fully designed and manufactured car in 1980. Later projects included the electric Itaipu E400\u002FE500 and the Carajás SUV. Government policies, specifically reductions in import taxes on smaller vehicles, contributed to Gurgel’s decline and eventual bankruptcy in 1994. The company ceased operations, though several models continue to be found on Brazilian roads today. The Gurgel trademark was subsequently sold, and the brand is now associated with a small Brazilian importer of tricycles. João do Amaral Gurgel, the company’s founder, died in 2009 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.","https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FGurgel",{"id":18,"type":19,"modified_on":20,"width":21,"height":21},"dd84ad3b-1f86-4bc6-bd75-bf2ef4d0fc17","image\u002Fsvg+xml","2026-08-04T22:19:06.968Z",800,{"id":23,"name":24,"slug":25,"region":26,"latitude":27,"longitude":28,"flag":29},"296b2799-a639-43d8-a477-df401289fd6c","Brazil","brazil","south_america",-10.3333333,-53.2,{"id":30,"type":19,"modified_on":31,"width":12,"height":12},"a1c83230-3b76-4552-8cce-6f83360e7284","2025-05-15T20:23:35.580Z",[33],{"person_id":34},{"id":35,"name":36,"slug":37,"born":38,"deceased":39,"city":40,"region":12,"image":41,"country":46,"founded":48},"3d36b6c2-259e-4de9-94bc-8bb3c5e49d45","João do Amaral Gurgel","joao-do-amaral-gurgel","1926-03-26","2009-01-30","Franca",{"id":42,"type":43,"modified_on":44,"width":45,"height":45},"7bc085ab-eb5b-4483-90b6-c42762ce0c82","image\u002Fpng","2026-03-23T22:16:00.067Z",512,{"id":23,"name":24,"slug":25,"flag":47},{"id":30,"type":19,"modified_on":31,"width":12,"height":12},[49],{"make_id":50},{"id":6,"name":8,"slug":7,"founded":9,"defunct":10,"country":51,"emblem":53,"emblem_dark":12},{"id":23,"slug":25,"name":24,"flag":52},{"id":30,"type":19,"modified_on":31,"width":12,"height":12},{"id":18,"type":19,"modified_on":20,"width":21,"height":21},[],[],[],[],{"meta":59,"data":62},{"total_count":60,"filter_count":61},98756,0,[]]
