The brand was separated from the Chrysler division in 1955 to improve its market positioning. During the 1957-1966 period, Imperial was known for its exceptionally wide body style and substantial frame construction, setting a record for interior shoulder room. The 1957 model year marked the introduction of Virgil Exner's ‘Forward Look’ styling, which significantly influenced Imperial design throughout the decade. Production of the 1957 model year reached a peak, surpassing Cadillac’s sales figures. Later models included innovations such as the first all-transistor car radio in 1955 and cruise control in 1958. The Imperial’s production moved to a dedicated facility in Warren, Michigan, in 1959.
