In 1988, Knud Erik Westergaard founded Kewet to manufacture electric vehicles. The first cars were produced in 1991. Production moved to Nordhausen, Germany, in 1995 but the facility was unsuccessful. Kewet International was formed in 1998, and rights to the vehicle were transferred to Elbil Norge AS in Norway. From 1991 through October 2013, approximately 1,500 Kewet and Buddy vehicles were sold primarily in Norway. The Buddy model, produced since 2007, uses a 72-volt system and a 13 kW motor.
