Initially, it manufactured Ilo two-stroke engines. After World War II, Maico began producing its own unit construction two-stroke motorcycles and briefly entered the microcar market in the late 1950s. The company is best known for its motocross and enduro machines, which achieved success in European and American competition during the 1970s. Maico riders, such as Adolf Weil, Åke Jonsson and Willy Bauer, challenged Japanese manufacturers. In 1974, the Wheelsmith Motorcycles team and Gunther Schier teams pioneered forward-mounted rear shocks on Maico motorcycles. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1983, but production continued under various owners until 1986.  The Maicoletta motor scooter, produced from the 1950s, was one of the largest scooters of its time. A unique Bosch pendulum starter system powered the Maicoletta, and later Maico motorcycles. In 1995, Rodem acquired the brand, followed by Koestler in Germany, who continues to produce Maico motorcycles today.
