The company was founded by Émile Mathis, who began as a car dealer in Strasbourg before establishing his own factory. Mathis initially produced smaller models such as the Babylette and Baby, alongside licensed versions of vehicles from other manufacturers. During World War I, Mathis focused on supplying tires to the German government. After the war, production increased significantly, and the company briefly became one of France’s leading automobile manufacturers. Mathis attempted to compete with Citroën and formed a joint venture with William Crapo Durant’s American company, Matam. Production ceased in 1935 with the introduction of Matford, a Ford-Mathis collaboration. During World War II, Émile Mathis escaped to the United States and later returned to his factory in Strasbourg. Post-war, the plant was heavily damaged but rebuilt. The company shifted its focus to producing engines for light aircraft and components for Renault before finally closing in 1950. Citroën acquired the plant in 1954.","https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FMathis_(cars)",{"id":18,"type":19,"modified_on":20,"width":21,"height":21},"c8307689-0066-48e6-9939-94c523631300","image\u002Fsvg+xml","2026-03-25T02:14:05.862Z",800,{"id":23,"type":19,"modified_on":24,"width":12,"height":12},"1ef94820-b4cf-49ab-9a0a-ad1f93372452","2026-03-25T02:14:10.919Z",{"id":26,"name":27,"slug":28,"region":29,"latitude":30,"longitude":31,"flag":32},"19aea675-c2bf-488a-bb7e-019068edb7a6","France","france","europe",46.603354,1.8883335,{"id":33,"type":19,"modified_on":34,"width":12,"height":12},"a75e7d8f-5fe3-4cca-b8ae-92127e7d576b","2025-05-15T20:24:26.246Z",[36],{"person_id":37},{"id":38,"name":39,"slug":40,"born":41,"deceased":42,"city":11,"region":12,"image":43,"country":48,"founded":50},"0ca5ca60-4ca8-460e-95c1-3978f98c34ca","Émile Mathis","emile-mathis","1880-03-15","1956-08-03",{"id":44,"type":45,"modified_on":46,"width":47,"height":47},"889e5b46-c344-46f5-8dd1-d52cb9ec377f","image\u002Fpng","2026-04-20T21:57:52.522Z",512,{"id":26,"name":27,"slug":28,"flag":49},{"id":33,"type":19,"modified_on":34,"width":12,"height":12},[51],{"make_id":52},{"id":6,"name":8,"slug":7,"founded":9,"defunct":10,"country":53,"emblem":55,"emblem_dark":56},{"id":26,"slug":28,"name":27,"flag":54},{"id":33,"type":19,"modified_on":34,"width":12,"height":12},{"id":18,"type":19,"modified_on":20,"width":21,"height":21},{"id":23,"type":19,"modified_on":24,"width":12,"height":12},[],[],[],[],{"meta":62,"data":65},{"total_count":63,"filter_count":64},98756,0,[]]
