The company initially began with bicycle parts manufacturing in 1886, and later formed the Waltham Manufacturing Company. In 1901, Metz left this company due to disagreements about its direction. He then reorganized the Waltham Manufacturing Company as the Metz Company in 1909, inheriting a stock of automobile parts for a 10-hp runabout. The company offered a kit car program, known as the Metz Plan, allowing buyers to assemble vehicles with supplied plans and tools. In 1913, Metz introduced the Model 22, a two-seat roadster with a 22.5 hp engine and friction drive. The company produced approximately 40,082 cars during its operation. In 1917, Metz added light trucks to its production line. However, business was curtailed in 1918 due to World War I and subsequent road blockades. The company was then taken over by the Waltham National Bank in 1919, and renamed Motor Manufacturers Incorporated of Waltham.
