WSK Mielec constructed the bodywork, while WSK Rzeszów produced the engines for this microcar. Only 1,728 units were manufactured during its production run. The car was designed to be an affordable vehicle for the population, utilizing existing production capacity at aerospace plants. WSK Rzeszów developed engine plans and WSK Mielec focused on the chassis and body. The first prototypes were presented in Warsaw during 1957. Initial sales began at the end of that year, with a convertible version also available. The Mikrus cost 50,000 Polish Złoty at the time, approximately equivalent to 50 average salaries. In 1960, WSK Mielec created a prototype pick-up version in response to a government directive for compact panel trucks. This design utilized the existing chassis and suspension of the original model, with a canvas cover for cargo transport.
