Production began in 2011, but ceased in May 2013 after the company’s finances fell below a $50 million clean-energy loan requirement. In September 2013, AM General acquired VPG’s assets after purchasing the related loan. AM General then created Mobility Ventures, a subsidiary, to continue MV-1 production and distribution through its dealer network. Production restarted in March 2014. The MV-1 was designed to replace the Standard Taxi, a prototype taxicab unveiled in 2005. It was built at an AM General plant in Mishawaka, Indiana. The MV-1 could accommodate up to six adults and two full-size wheelchairs, with an ADA-approved ramp. New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission approved the MV-1 for use as a yellow cab in October 2011.
