It began as the Scientific Automobile Laboratory within the Scientific and Technical Department of the VSNKh. From 1927, NAMI developed its first automobile, the NAMI-1, which was also the first car produced in the Soviet Union. During the 1930s, it became a primary development center for the Soviet automotive industry. The institute created trolleybuses, tractor and lorry models, and armored vehicles for the Red Army.\n\nIn 1946, NAMI underwent a reorganization. The tractor division was transferred to the Ministry of Agricultural Machinery. The automobile branch continued under the Ministry of Automobile Industry, and was renamed again in 1946. In the post-Soviet era, NAMI acquired the Yo-Mobile project in 2014 and later became involved with the Aurus Senat car line in 2021.
