Initially, the company manufactured bodywork for bus and truck chassis. By 1953, Neoplan began producing buses using a monocoque design with a steel tube skeleton. Air suspension was introduced in 1957. In 1961, the Typ Hamburg bus design was unveiled, featuring individual passenger air supply controls and air suspension. Albrecht Auwärter succeeded his father as managing director in 1965, and Bob Lee joined as head of Engineering and Design. The company expanded its operations with a second manufacturing facility in Pilsting in 1973 and one in Kumasi, Ghana, in 1974. Further facilities were added in the United States and China during the late 20th century, with Neoplan USA operating as a licensed subsidiary. In 1996, the Starliner was introduced and won Bus of the Year awards in 1998 and 1999. In 2001, MAN AG acquired Neoplan Bus GmbH, integrating it into MAN Nutzfahrzeuge Group.
