It began as a manufacturer using De Dion-Bouton engines under license. Louis P. Mooers designed the initial Peerless vehicles and later developed proprietary engines. The company produced a range of automobiles, including early enclosed-body models and the first Peerless-branded vehicles in 1902. Peerless introduced innovations such as drum brakes and electric lighting, and in 1915, it produced its first V8 engine. During World War I, Peerless manufactured military vehicles for Great Britain. In 1929, the company redesigned its range to compete with Stutz and Marmon. Production ceased in 1931 due to the Great Depression, with a single V-16 prototype completed in 1932.
