Initially focused on importing and manufacturing bicycles, particularly the Columbia brand, the company began with air pistols and cigarette rolling machines. By 1878, it was producing high-wheel bicycles using parts manufactured at the Weed Sewing Machine Company factory in Hartford. Albert Pope’s cousin, Edward, joined as bookkeeper in 1880, and later George Bidwell became a key sales agent. The company shifted to producing safety bicycles in 1886, incorporating innovations like a chain drive. In 1890, Pope Manufacturing established Hartford Cycle Company to compete with Overman Wheel Company. The company pioneered the use of stamping for metal parts and became a leading US bicycle manufacturer until 1896. Later, it expanded into motorcycle production from 1902 to 1918 and automobiles between 1897 and 1915, operating several subsidiary companies during this period. In 1907, the company declared bankruptcy and was reorganized as The Westfield Manufacturing Company.  It later became a subsidiary of The Torrington Company, and finally, in 1967, merged with MTD.
