Heaslet served as chief engineer for the entire production period. Chassis were initially supplied by the Garford Company of Elyria, Ohio. In 1907, concerns about chassis supply led to the decision to build cars entirely in-house. A new plant was constructed in Saginaw for 1908 production. The company faced financial difficulties during the Panic of 1907, leading to bankruptcy and subsequent sale to General Motors in 1909. GM then established the Marquette Motor Company, utilizing Rainier’s Saginaw factory to produce vehicles including the Welch Motor Car Company line. Production of the Rainier automobile ceased in 1911, with later models marketed as Marquette and Peninsular. John T.
