It operated as part of the Renault group, with its headquarters in Suresnes, Île-de-France. Saviem was formed in 1955 through the merger of Renault’s truck and bus operations with Somua and Latil. Schneider, owner of Somua, and the Blum family, owners of Latil, held stakes in the new company. Initially, Saviem used the badges of its constituent companies before adopting the ‘Saviem-LRS’ marque in 1957, simplifying to ‘Saviem’ in 1960. By 1959, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Renault. Saviem produced small commercial vehicles derived from existing Renault models, as well as medium and heavy trucks with Alfa Romeo engines and Chausson support for coach\u002Fbus production. The company formed partnerships with manufacturers such as Henschel-Werke and MAN, resulting in joint production of truck ranges. In 1978, Saviem merged with Berliet to form Renault Véhicules Industriels. Before the merger, Saviem operated factories in locations including Blainville-sur-Orne and Annonay, while Vénissieux and Saint-Ouen were former Somua factories.
