Initially a coachbuilder producing wagons and carriages, the company entered the automotive business in 1902. For several decades, Studebaker operated under partnership agreements with Garford and E-M-F before establishing itself as an independent manufacturer in 1911. The company’s early automotive production involved electric vehicles, followed by gasoline models. In 1913, a major labor strike occurred at the South Bend plant.  During World War I, Studebaker supplied thousands of vehicles and parts to Allied governments. The company’s engineering team, led by Fred M. Zeder and his colleagues, developed innovations such as monobloc engine casting and improved clutch designs.  Studebaker established a proving ground in 1926, utilizing a distinctive pattern of pine trees to spell its name. By 1929, the company operated multiple plants across Indiana and Detroit, employing over 23,000 people. Production capacity reached 180,000 cars annually. The company ceased automobile production in South Bend in December 1963, with the last Studebaker vehicle manufactured in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in March 1966.
